The June 2008 Flare of Markarian 421 from Optical to Tev Energies

چکیده
We present optical, X-ray, high energy (/ 30 GeV) and very high energy (' 100 GeV; VHE) observations of the high-frequency peaked blazar Mrk 421 taken between 2008 May 24 and June 23. A high energy γ-ray signal was detected by AGILE with √ TS = 4.5 on June 9–15, with F (E > 100 MeV) = 42 −12 × 10 photons cm s. This flaring state is brighter than the average flux observed by EGRET by a factor of ∼3, but still consistent with the highest EGRET flux. In hard X-rays (20-60 keV) SuperAGILE resolved a 5-day flare (June 9-15) peaking at ∼ 55 mCrab. SuperAGILE, RXTE/ASM and Swift/BAT data show a correlated flaring structure between soft and hard X-rays. Hints of the same flaring behavior are also detected in the simultaneous optical data provided by the GASP-WEBT. A Swift/XRT observation near the flaring maximum revealed the highest 2-10 keV flux ever observed from this source, of 2.6 ×10 erg cm s (i.e. > 100 mCrab). A peak synchrotron energy of ∼3 keV was derived, higher than typical values of ∼0.5-1 keV. VHE observations with MAGIC and VERITAS on June 6-8 show the flux peaking in a bright state, well correlated with the X-rays. This extraordinary set of simultaneous data, covering a twelve-decade spectral range, allowed for a deep analysis of the spectral energy distribution as well as of correlated light curves. The γ-ray flare can be interpreted within the framework of the synchrotron self-Compton model in terms of a rapid acceleration of leptons in the jet. 2 I. Donnarumma et al. Observation of Strong Variability in the X-Ray Emission from Markarian 421 Correlated with the May 1996 TeV Flare
We observed the BL Lac object Markarian 421 with the X-ray satellite RXTE and the Whipple Air Cerenkov Telescope during a two week correlated Xray/gamma-ray campaign in May 1996. Two dramatic outbursts with extremely rapid and strong flux variations were observed at TeV energies during this period. The X-ray emission in the 2-10 keV band was highly variable and reached a peak flux of 5.6×10 erg...
متن کاملTHE TeV GAMMA-RAY SPECTRUM OF MARKARIAN 421 DURING AN INTENSE FLARE
We present the gamma-ray spectrum of the BL Lacertae object, Markarian 421, above 500 GeV during its most intense recorded TeV flare, on 1996 May 7. The spectrum is well fitted by a power law with an exponent of (statistical and systematic errors). The spectrum extends above 5 TeV with no evidence 22.56 5 0.07 5 0.1 for a cutoff, favoring determinations of the extragalactic infrared energy dens...
متن کاملSimultaneous X-Ray and TeV Observations of a Rapid Flare from Markarian 421.
Mrk 421 was observed for about 2 days with BeppoSAX in 1998 April as part of a worldwide multiwavelength campaign. A large, well-defined flare was observed in X-rays. The same flare was observed simultaneously at TeV energies by the Whipple Observatory gamma-ray telescope. These data provide (1) the first evidence that the X-ray and TeV intensities are well correlated on timescales of hours and...
متن کاملGamma - Rays 1 Observation of gamma - rays greater than 10 TeV from
We have observed Markarian 421 during an extraordinarily high state in January and March 2001 with the CANGAROO-II imaging Cherenkov telescope. From 14 hours observations at a large zenith angle of ∼70◦, a signal of 298± 52 gamma-ray–like events was detected at E > 10 TeV with 5.7 σ significance. Under the assumption of power-law spectrum, we derived a steep energy spectrum of photon index ∼4.0...
متن کاملX-ray flares from Markarian 501
Motivated by the recent discovery of a hierarchical X-ray flaring phenomenon in Mrk 421, we conducted a systematic search for X-ray flares from Mrk 501, another well-known TeV blazar, by making use of the rich RXTE archival database. We detected flares over a wide range of timescales, from months down to minutes, as in the case of Mrk 421. However, the flares do not seem to occur nearly as freq...
